Don’t mess about with your MINI’s tyres
As the only thing holding your MINI on the road, tyres are obviously an essential part of being safe behind the wheel. Here’s some advice on how to make sure your tyre treads and pressure are correct, helping you get the most from your MINI without taking any risks.
Are your tyres legal?
It’s important to know that the minimum legal limit is 1.6mm across the middle 75% of your tyre at any point. There’s are tyre wear indicators in the base of the tyre tread groove, so once the tread has worn to these indicators, your tyres are at 1.6mm and illegal so it’s time to get them replaced.
If you prefer, contact one of our MINI retail centres and book your MINI in for a complimentary tyre safety check.
Are your tyre the correct pressure?
Tyre condition is important, but it’s also essential that you check that your tyre pressures are set correctly. The recommendation is that you check them at least twice a month as incorrect pressure could cause irregular wear patterns. Over-inflation leads to excessive wear to the centre of the tyres, whereas under-inflation can cause more wear on the shoulders of the tyres. Depending on the make and model of your car, you may need to reset the tyre pressure warning system, but it should tell you in your car manual or do feel free to contact one of our MINI Centres for more information.
Premature tyre wear cam be caused by changes in the wheel alignment that you can’t feel even through steering, so you should have your vehicle’s wheel alignment checked.
