There is more than enough space for children, however, and regardless of height, there is a surprisingly large amount of knee room for rear passengers. There s not much space for feet beneath the front seats but, unlike the coupe or previous 1 Series, Storage-wise you get map pockets on the back of the front seats and some pretty long door bins. Up front, you get large door bins, a cubby box underneath the centre armrest, a glovebox, two front cupholders ahead of the gear-lever and a tray that allows your smart phone to sit at an angle. The boot is usefully deep for storing long items, and has generous further storage below its floor. The driver s seat can be positioned relatively low by mainstream car standards, in-keeping with BMW s sportier-than-average ethos but you still get a good view out ahead of you, thanks to a relatively low dashboard. M Sport cars have a large infotainment screen which can be controlled either by touchscreen, voice control or via the traditional iDrive rotary controller. Cars in this trim level also come with a 10.25-inch digital screen for the driver s dials. This works in its favour here as it s easier to see the outer edges of the screen within your peripheral vision where all the important information is placed, such as the speedometer and rev counter. There is plenty of adjustment for front passengers, who ll enjoy the supportive seats. M Sport cars go further by having heated front seats as standard and leather upholstery. With 190hp, the 220d diesel is swift, thanks partly to its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine churning out a plentiful 400Nm of torque.
