The Estate That Changed Everything

Launched in June 1991, the Volvo 850 broke completely with how Volvo's cars had been made before — it was sharper, faster and more driver-focused than anything the brand had produced. When the estate version joined the saloon in February 1993, it collected a number of awards for its clever design, with the Italians going as far as to name it the most beautiful estate. Then Volvo did the unthinkable: they went racing in it.

The 850 was the first car in the world to offer side-impact airbags, introduced in 1994, a development that changed the industry standard for passenger protection.

When the car launched in 1991 it drew effusive praise not just for its safety, but also its engaging handling and characterful engine, a genuine shift in what a Volvo could feel like to drive.

The Estate That Went Racing

In April 1994 two liveried Volvo 850 estate cars rolled up to the start line at Thruxton for the BTCC season opener. Everyone thought it was a joke. It wasn't — and it remains one of the most memorable moments in British motorsport history.
