Three members of Lloyd Motor Group’s Marketing Department — Tara, Sam, and Lauren — recently swapped their desks for the driver’s seat as they headed out for the Half-Day Land Rover Experience in Skipton, a complimentary experience included with the purchase of any new or Approved Used Land Rover.

Arriving with a mix of excitement and nerves, the team were greeted with refreshments before being introduced to the star of their day: the iconic Land Rover Defender 110. “If you’re going to put a vehicle to the test, why not choose the Defender?” Tara said.

Their instructor for the day, Craig, immediately put them at ease. Calm, knowledgeable, and a true expert in Land Rover technology, he walked the group through the Defender’s most essential systems — the features they’d rely on once the terrain became more challenging.

Tara, an admitted adrenaline seeker, volunteered to take the wheel first. From tackling 30-degree inclines to experimenting with brake assist and shifting through specialised drive modes — including Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl — Tara said the experience reshaped her understanding of the vehicle’s engineering. “I knew the Defender was impressive,” she explained, “but driving it myself showed me just how extraordinary its technology really is.”


With Tara behind the wheel, the Defender demonstrates its stability and control while tackling a demanding side-slope section of the course.

Next up were Lauren and Sam, who each navigated the course with growing confidence. They tackled steep hills, uneven terrain, and challenging obstacles, growing more confident with each challenge.

For Sam, the Defender delivered more than a few jaw-dropping moments. “One moment that really made me think, ‘Wow, I can’t believe this vehicle can do that,’ was when we were driving down a very steep hill on automatic drive. I wasn’t doing anything but steering, and the car handled it completely on its own,” she said, still sounding amazed. “Then, at the bottom, our instructor Craig pressed a button—and suddenly we were reversing back up the hill, again with the car fully in control. Honestly, there were so many moments like that throughout the day. It’s an incredible experience, and definitely worth doing.”

Lauren shared that her confidence grew significantly over the course, admitting that she had been nervous at first as a passenger. “Once I took the wheel, I could feel how much control the vehicle had on its own and how it adapted to the route. I quickly became confident driving and could really trust the Defender.”

Approaching the water section brought its own adrenaline rush. “It seems so unnatural driving through water that deep so I can’t say I wasn’t nervous but the Defender tackled the deep water with complete ease,” Sam admitted, “it was such a fun experience.” Crossing old railway tracks, descending into deep ditches, and wading through 25 metres of water three feet high demonstrating the Defender’s unmatched capability.
