The exact date the new registration plates are released may vary from year to year, but they are usually on the first of the month.

As a result, newer cars that are more fuel-efficient and produce fewer emissions generally pay less road tax than older cars. This means that, in general, new cars are likely to have lower road tax rates than older cars.
