At Lloyd Land Rover Carlisle, we're proud to support our technicians at every stage of their career — from apprentice right through to Master Technician and beyond. Whether they've joined us from a local garage, another brand, or a different department entirely, we're committed to helping them grow.

We caught up with some of our Master Technicians to find out more about the journeys that brought them here.

Ross - 9 Years with Lloyd Land Rover
Can you take us through your journey — how did you progress to a Master Tech?
I joined Lloyd Motor Group in 2017, initially working for Lloyd Jaguar before merging with Land Rover. Training and the possibility of progression were made clear from the very beginning. I completed all the requirements for both Levels 3 and 4 and passed my practical, end-of-level assessments for both. In addition to this, I was offered training to work on electric vehicles. Starting as an EVCP and EVAP before qualifying as an EV Senior Authorised Technician. I also completed the additional training required to carry out live battery repairs.

How has Lloyd Land Rover supported your development throughout your time here?
Lloyd JLR have supported me completely on my training journey. My service manager worked closely with me and JLR to help me achieve my goal of qualifying as a level 4 Technician.

Would you say internal moves and progression like yours are common here? What's that culture like?
Since I qualified as a Level 4 Technician, there have been 5 other technicians qualify to the same level, so yes, progression is encouraged and common.

What part of the job gives you the most satisfaction?
Problem solving and the sense of achievement after a fault has been identified then repaired is the most rewarding part of my job.

If you had to sum up working here in one sentence, what would you say?
There's so much variety to the job, no two days are ever the same.

Ben - 5 Years with Lloyd Land Rover
Can you take us through your journey — how did you progress to a Master Tech?
I had an NVQ Level 3 before joining Lloyd Land Rover, so I jumped in as a Level 3 Tech here, so you get fast tracked through the process at Level 3. I passed that with flying colours, straight into Level 4 because Marcus was wanting to push me through and I finished that within 5 months.

What training has Lloyd Land Rover provided you? And which was your favourite?
The training's endless, they've got everything from your EV training, there's four different levels to that obviously you've got your Level 2, Level 3, Level 4. So yeah, endless training. There's even customer service training, which is a bit different but obviously as a Tech, it needs to happen. My favourite was probably Level 4 because it was the most in depth, going into indexes, and your can systems, and your ecosystem.

Why do you think Lloyd Land Rover is a good place to build a long-term career?
Again, as Lloyd Motor Group is a family business, they like to put the individual first and push you forward, through your training, with holidays, family, and everything else.

What is the workshop like on a day to day basis?
At Lloyd Land Rover we've got a good atmosphere here. The technicians all get on well, so we're a close knit team. Obviously we deal with hard jobs here but it's part of the process and we stick to it, together, and get through it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a Master Technician?

"If you want to become a Master Technician, you have to get into a dealership, there's no way around that but Lloyd Motor Group is probably one of the best because they do push you through your training and they are one of the best family companies in the country so they'll push you through and get you to the top quick."

Joel - 12 Years with Lloyd Land Rover
Can you take us through your journey — how did you progress to a Master Tech?
Started as an apprentice, which I did in 3 years. Approximately 3 years after qualifying, I started Level 3 Diagnostic tech. I completed Level 3 in approximately 18 months. I then took approximately 1 year gap from training and started Level 4 and EV training, and qualified Level 4 in 2025.
