Rising to the Top: Matty and Joel’s Master Technician Success

Lloyd Land Rover Carlisle is delighted to announce Technicians, Matty Burton and Joel Simpson have excelled with their level 4 accreditation and officially join the elite network of JLR Master Technicians.

The pathway to the coveted role of Master Technician is highly competitive and demanding, especially within a luxury automotive brand such as JLR. Successful Technicians must demonstrate an exceptional level of skill, product knowledge and safety, with only a small percentage actually achieving the title.

Having begun their careers as apprentices, the duo have dedicated themselves to their trade, showcasing exceptional skill and talent. At Lloyd, maintaining an exceptional level of client care has always been of the utmost importance to us, and having access to this level of expertise within our workshops is truly invaluable. The team could not be prouder of both Matty and Joel on this incredible achievement.

What first attracted you to a career as a technician?

“I have always enjoyed practical work, working with tools and motorsports. So naturally, a career as a Technician felt like the perfect fit for me."

Can you briefly explain what a Master Technician is?

“A Master Technician is a Senior Vehicle Technician who has gained the qualification through various training assessments designed to test skill, saftey and efficentcy. It is also the highest level of training you can achieve as a Technician."

What kind of work or diagnostics are you qualified/equipped to handle now?

“I am now trained to carry out advanced electrical diagnostics using an oscilloscope.”

The path to Master Technician is long — but worth it. What skills or traits do you feel helped you get here?

“Willingness to learn, open-mindedness, and determination to succeed within my assessments. I also think being a good problem solver helps.”

What's the most rewarding aspect of working as a technician for a luxury brand like JLR?

“I have really enjoyed seeing my skills improve through my training and then being able to apply that knowledge to help my colleagues when needed.”

Can you walk us through your journey from Apprentice to Master Technician?

“I picked an apprenticeship with Lloyd because I have always loved the Land Rover brand, and my dad owned one that I enjoyed helping him to fix. After passing my apprenticeship I went on to start my level 3 qualification to help further develop my skill set. After passing this stage and enjoying the challenges it presented, I knew I wanted to try for Master Technician. I am delighted to say I passed!”

What was the most challenging part of achieving this qualification/was there a particular moment you’re most proud of during your journey?

“I’m most proud of getting 100% in all of my Master Technician assessments.”

What does it mean to you to represent your dealership and JLR at this level of expertise?

“It means a great deal to be considered an expert in this prestigious brand and I hope that I can become a role model to future technicians like one of our resident Master Technicians Kyle was to me.”

How do you feel you have changed or grown as a technician since your first day in the workshop?

“I feel both my confidence and skill set have massively improved since I first started, and now I am confident I can offer complex technical advice to those who may need it.”

Any last words for future apprentices who might be reading your story and considering an apprenticeship?

“Lloyd is a great place if you’re looking to become an experienced and valued vehicle technician because as you can see from my story, they are willing to invest in your training and progression through the workshop.”
