Celebrating 50 Years of Lloyd Motor Group

From a single showroom on Derwent Street to one of the UK's leading automotive groups, we're marking half a century of serving our customers and communities.

This year, Lloyd Motor Group celebrates its 50th anniversary — five decades since the business first opened its doors in Cockermouth, West Cumbria.

It's a milestone we're marking with pride, but also with a good deal of humility. Because while a lot has changed since 1976, the reason we're still here hasn't: the trust of our customers, the dedication of our people, and the support of the communities we serve.

Where it all began

On 4th August 1976, R. Lloyd Motors Ltd opened as a small BMW retailer on Derwent Street in Cockermouth. It was a modest start — one showroom, one brand, and a straightforward ambition to provide exceptional service and premium automotive experiences to the local community.

That founding site is where our story begins, and it's a part of our history we're proud to look back on today.

Today, we're proud to represent some of the world's most respected automotive brands across Cumbria, Lancashire, the North East, North Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders, but our roots, and our values, remain firmly planted in that first Cockermouth showroom.

A word from our Managing Director

Sam Lloyd, Managing Director of Lloyd Motor Group, reflected on the milestone:

"Fifty years is a significant milestone, and one we mark with a great deal of humility. This business was built on trust, hard work and long-term relationships, and that hasn't changed since the day we opened our doors in Cockermouth in 1976. Everything we've achieved has been down to the loyalty of our customers, the dedication of our colleagues, and the support of the communities we serve. We're proud of our history, but we're just as focused on the next fifty years as we are on the last."

Giving back, as we always have

Giving back has always been part of who we are. To mark our 50th year, we've launched a series of community initiatives and charitable activities across our retailer locations because the communities that have supported us for five decades deserve our support in return.
