Apprentice Success Stories

Many of our staff at Lloyd Motor Group began their careers as apprentices, and over the years, they have grown into senior and leadership roles across the business. Their journeys show the long-term opportunities, skill development, and career progression that apprenticeships can offer

Gary Horn, Head of Business at Lloyd Volvo Carlisle, began his automotive career as an apprentice Sales Executive in 1986. Over the years, he has climbed the ranks within the business, demonstrating dedication and expertise, and highlighting the long-term career opportunities available in the automotive sector.

"After starting as an apprentice in the roaring ’80s, my efforts were rewarded in 1990 with a promotion to Sales Manager. I then took over the Carlisle territory for Volvo, and in 1996 I was promoted to General Sales Manager, helping to establish the Lloyd Volvo business first at Border Court, Scotland Road, and then moving to its current site at Chandler Way, Parkhouse in 1997. In 2006, I was promoted to Head of Business at Lloyd Volvo, a role I continue to hold today. Starting as an apprentice gave me a strong foundation in automotive sales and business management, and those early experiences have been invaluable in supporting my career progression."

Sarah Caisley, now an Assistant Service Manager, began her career at Lloyd Newcastle BMW as an apprentice eight years ago. After completing the two-year Service Advisor Accreditation, she has progressed into her current role, demonstrating the long-term career opportunities available within the business.

"From joining Lloyd Newcastle BMW in 2017, I completed the 2-year Service Advisor Accreditation. I fulfilled the role of a BMW Service Advisor until 2021 where I became the Senior Service Advisor at Lloyd MINI Newcastle. During this time, I built many positive relationships with customers, gained experience, and developed my product knowledge, skills, and confidence. Fast forward 12 months and I was offered the promotion of Assistant Service Manager, a role I have now occupied for 2 years. Starting as an apprentice gave me a great insight into all the Aftersales processes across the business, and I believe that is one of the main reasons I have been able to progress my career."

Shaun Todhunter, now General Service Manager at Lloyd Carlisle BMW, began his career as an Apprentice Parts Advisor. His journey demonstrates the career progression and development opportunities available through apprenticeships.

“I started my career as an Apprentice Parts Advisor at Lloyd Carlisle BMW after leaving school. I passed the City and Guilds Motor Engineering course with a Distinction, and came 2nd in the National BMW Parts Apprentice of the Year contest. To help with career progression, I then moved up to Lloyd Carlisle Bodyshop. I was one of the first in the team when the Bodyshop was on Millbrook Road, helping with parts and also learning customer contact roles and estimating repairs. I then moved back to Lloyd BMW as the Assistant Service Manager when an opportunity arose, adding to my experience of learning in all Aftersales departments and now I'm in my current role as General Service Manager."
