Oliver Twynam Named BMW Apprentice Technician of the Year
This week, the BMW Academy Group hosted its prestigious annual Awards ceremony, recognising the outstanding achievements of 144 graduating apprentices from across the network. The event brought together the very best emerging talent within the BMW retailer community for a day of celebration, recognition, and achievement.
Lloyd Motor Group are delighted to announce Oliver Twynam, Technician Apprentice at Lloyd BMW Carlisle, was awarded the prestigious title of BMW Apprentice of the Year. A fantastic achievement that reflects his commitment, technical ability, and dedication throughout his apprenticeship.
We caught up with Oliver as he reflected on this incredible accomplishment...
What inspired you to apply for the BMW apprenticeship programme?
“I'd already completed a Level 2 apprenticeship at an independent garage in Scotland, which gave me a great foundation, but I knew I wanted more. The automotive industry is changing rapidly — with the advent of EVs, hybrid technology, and advanced air conditioning systems — and I wanted to be properly trained on all of it. BMW's programme offered exactly that, so making the move felt like the obvious next step.”
Why did you choose to pursue a career as a Technician?
“Honestly, cars have been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I always wanted to understand how things worked — and eventually, that curiosity turned into a desire to fix, improve, and work on them every day. When you love what you do, it doesn't feel like work!”
What attracted you to Lloyd BMW specifically?
“Lloyd BMW gave me the opportunity to train on some of the most advanced vehicles on the road. The level of expertise in the team, the quality of the training, and the support from my managers and mentors have been brilliant. I knew I'd be learning from some of the best in the industry.”

What has been the highlight of your apprenticeship journey?
What does it mean to be awarded BMW Apprentice of the Year?
“It means everything, to be honest. This has been a few years of real hard work, and it's amazing to have that recognised. But as much as it's a personal achievement, it's also a reflection of the people around me — my girlfriend, my parents, my CPA, and the whole team at Lloyd BMW. I wouldn't be here without them.”
Who has supported you most throughout your apprenticeship?
“I've been lucky to have a brilliant support network. My girlfriend and my parents have been there every step of the way — through the tough days and the good ones. My CPA kept me on track and pushed me when I needed it. And the managers and mentors at Lloyd BMW genuinely invested in my development. I'm really grateful to all of them.”
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in the motor industry?
“Just go for it. I've met an incredible bunch of people on my course and throughout the apprenticeship that I know will be friends for life. You earn while you learn, you get hands-on with technology that's shaping the future of motoring, and you come out the other side with real, industry-recognised qualifications. Don't let anyone tell you it's second best to university — it's just a different path, and for me it was absolutely the right one.”
On behalf of everyone at Lloyd BMW Carlisle, we would like to congratulate Oliver once again on this fantastic achievement. We look forward to seeing his career with Lloyd BMW continue to grow and flourish in the years ahead.
